The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, established in 2001, has been a most successful mechanism in the respond to these three killer diseases in developing countries all over the world. It has had an essential role in realizing the goals of Universal Access with providing more than 2,5 million people with anti-retroviral treatment and scaling up HIV-prevention services in 144 countries worldwide.
Now, the Global Fund is going through a crisis: major donor countries are cutting back on their donations, using the financial crisis as an excuse, and with the new eligibility criteria in countries where treatment and prevention services are fully funded by the Global Fund these programs will disappear.
