Supreme Court: the police discriminated against the Roma of Gyöngyöspata

The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) initiated an actio popularis lawsuit based on the Equal Treatment Act of Hungary (ETA) against the Heves County Police Department following racially motivated events in the village of Gyöngyöspata (Heves County, Hungary) in the spring of 2011. In its judgment of 8 February 2017, the Supreme Court of Hungary (the Kúria) ruled that the failure to protect the Roma from racist harassment amounted to harassment under the ETA.

HCLU Wins Award, Declines Acceptance

A few days ago, the HCLU was notified about winning an award at the 5th Roma Life –Central European Documentary Festival from the Foundation for Democracy and Political Culture for our film, Gyöngyöspata 2011. However, we declined to accept the award.

Hungary is under review by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Hungary ratified the UN Convention on the rights of the child in 1993. For the third time - after 1998 and then 2006 - the Committee reviews Hungary's compliance with the Convention. A coalition of NGOs - including the HCLU - has reported to the Committee.
