The Hungarian government will erect a 175-kilometer-long fence along its southern border with Serbia in an effort to prevent refugees from entering Hungary. The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union claims the fence represents an inhuman and unacceptable action that is not legitimized by international precedents. It is inhuman because the fence would stop everyone trying to cross the border, including refugees fleeing in fear for their lives and security. The Hungarian Supreme Court has once again nullified certain sections of a regulation issued by the municipality of Budapest that marks the illicit zones where sleeping on the street may be punished. HCLU is concerned because, as in the case of its earlier decision, the court has again raised only formal objections, without challenging those aspects of the regulation that violate human dignity.
